THE 60th CONCERT OF SURABAYA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Independence Day Concert 2009


     Classic fans, Surabaya Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and Surabaya Oratorio Society (SOS) held Independence Day Concert that was counted as the 3rd concert of the year and the 60th performance all together, at Shangri-La Hotel Ballroom, from 19.05 until 21.30.

     Celebrating the 64th Independence Day of The Republic of Indonesia, national songs, such as Indonesia Raya, Bagimu Neg’ri, Balada Kalimas (these 3 songs were sung by a choir from SD Petemon 2, SMPN 12, and SMA Trimurti, taught by M. Isfanhari). Satu Nusa Satu Bangsa, Desaku yang Kucinta, Naik Delman (performed by the students of “Da Capo” SSO music Playgroup), Kudengar SuaraMu, Nun…Dia…Di mana?, Suruhlah Terang (performed by Surabaya Oratorio Society choir with piano accompaniment by E. Karlina Magawe), Melati di Tapal Batas (by Trio: Euginia Devina Limandhika, Bella Catharina Koesmarsono & Benita Natalie Koesmarsono), and Karam (a solo by Dewi Endrawati).

     Assistant Governor of East Java, Mr. Akmal, on behalf of Governor of East Java, delivered a speech, wherein he mentioned the pride that SSO brought upon Surabaya with its exixtence.

     One of Mozart’s masterpieces, “Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor KV. 466” was played beautifully by Feliana Sutanto, pianist, and the audience enjoyed it.

     Songs from operas, like Ebben n’andro Lontana (La Wally), by A. Catalani and Der Holle Rache Kocht (Die Zauberflote) by W.A. Mozart - sung by Pauline Poegoeh, and Overture – Die Jahreszeiten (J. Haydn), were performed as well. Other performances were delivered: a Chinese folksong: Pai Mi Er Wo Te Jia Duo Me Mei by Chang Ching Feng was sung by Yang Yi Juan (China), Quartet of Cynthia Setiawan, Aerin Anggono, Priscilla Tanjung and Elaine Jocelyna Sanjoto with piano accompaniment by Ivana Nyotosetiadi sang “Ecce Homo, by H. Goodall, – theme song of “Mr. Bean” and Do You Hear What I Hear? by N. Regney/G. Shayne.

     Oratorio pieces were listed also, performed by SOS Choir with piano accompaniment by E. Karlina Magawe such songs as “And The Glory of The Lord from Messiah by G.F. Handel, “I Waited for The Lord (Lobgesang)” by F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and a piece by C. Goundo “Send Out Thy Light”.

     Another piece of W.A. Mozart and Carried Away (On The Town) by L. Bernstein were sung by a duet performance: Kathryn Mueller (Soprano) and Nathan Krueger (Bariton) with piani accompaniment by Aryo Wicaksono. They call themselves “Swara Sonora Trio” from USA, were in Indonesia for a “Peace Tour” – a program by Unicef Indonesia. Piano pieces such as “Mephisto Waltz” by F. Liszt and “From Love and Variation” by Ananda Sukarlan, were played by Aryo Wocaksono.

     The audiences were practically amazed by the performers that they sat and watched the concert with much enjoyment. The concert was conducted by Solomon Tong and Christian Xenophanes. For your information, Mr. Solomon Tong orchestrated 8 songs that were performed that night: Bagimu Neg’ri, Nun…Dia…Di mana?, Ku Dengar SuaraMu, Melati di Tapal Batas, Suruhlah Terang, Karam, Pai Mi Er Wo Te Jia Xiang Duo Me Mei, and Ebben n’andro Lontana.

     Classic fans, the baton held in the conductor’s hand ended that concert and left such a deep impression to the audience. SSO concert has been a favorite program to classical music lovers in Surabaya and these concerts have been a fixed annual schedule for SSO and SOS. We’ll see you again at the next concert on 14 December 2009, the Christmas Concert.
